INSPIRATION AND VISUAL PLANNING FOR PHOTO SESSION
Toda sessão fotográfica começa com um planejamento. Esta é uma etapa essencial, e das mais importantes para facilitar o processo criativo e organizar o dia de trabalho.
Every photo shoot starts with a planning, this is an essential step and for me, one of the most important to facilitate the creative process and organize our working day.
Nem sempre foi assim e quando comecei a fotografar as preparações que fazia, o processo era ao reverso: cozinhava e só depois pensava na foto. Mudei a ordem e pude ver que curto cada passo até chegar a hora de colocar o prato em frente à câmera. Minimizei o tempo que perdia tentando decorações e fotos que não me satisfaziam, sobrou mais tempo para criar e me fez chegar a resultados tão mais satisfatórios, e é por isso que venho aqui te encorajar a dedicar mais atenção à esse planejamento e ver essa mudança acontecer aí também :)
Seja qual for o objetivo das fotos: atualizar o conteúdo do Instagram ou fotografar para um cliente, os passos que sigo são mais ou menos os mesmos e neste post montei um guia prático para nos ajudar a fazer o planejamento prévio de uma sessão fotográfica, agindo com mais intenção e objetivos definidos para alcançar um melhor resultado em menos tempo.
It wasn't always like this, when I started photographing my recipes I used to do the other way around: First I cooked and only then I thought about the photo. I changed the order and could see that I enjoy each step until the time to put the plate in front of the camera.
The time I wasted trying decorations and photos that did not satisfied me was minimized, there was more time to create and it made me achieve better results, which is why I come here to encourage you to dedicate more attention to the planning and see the change happen to you too :)
Whatever the purpose of the photos: updating Instagram content or photographing for a client, the steps I follow are more or less the same and this post is a practical guide to help us with the visual planning of a photo shoot, which we can use to act with more intention and defined goals to achieve better results in less time.

O QUE VOU FOTOGRAFAR?
Definir qual será a estrela principal da foto e analisar o porquê desta escolha:
- É um prato que leva um ingrediente sazonal que você quer enaltecer?
- Uma receita para um post no seu Blog ou IG que você quer dividir porque é super fácil?
- Algo que você ama comer porque te lembra algum momento especial e você quer recriar este momento?
Esta análise vai ajudar nos passos seguintes que vamos ver aqui.
No caso de ser um trabalho comercial gosto de investigar mais a fundo sobre a marca, o produto e quem está por trás do negócio para gerar uma visão mais ampla do objetivo das fotos e depois afunilar para um propósito mais concreto, com personalidade e características genuínas.
The first question to ask is:
WHAT WILL I PHOTOGRAPH? Define the leading star of the photo and analyze why you've made this choice: - Is it a dish that has a seasonal ingredient that you want to highlight? - A recipe for a post on your Blog or IG that you want to share because it's super easy? - Is it something you love to eat because it reminds you of a special moment and so you want to recreate this moment? Thinking about the "why" will help us in the next steps that we will see here. In the case of being a commercial work I like to investigate about the brand, the product and who is behind the business to generate a broader view of the purpose of the photos and only then define the main focus of the shoot, it will add personality and genuine characteristics to the work and make the client much happier.
BUSCAR REFERÊNCIAS VISUAIS
Referências visuais são as inspirações encontradas em outras imagens, que vão traduzir nossa idéia antes de ela acontecer. Aqui não precisamos incluir somente imagens do objeto em si, também podemos incorporar idéias que traduzam de alguma forma a sessão que queremos fazer, valem retratos, desenhos, textos, estampas, paletas de cores.
Costumo usar o Pinterest para selecionar referências visuais e definir o tipo de luz, mood, cores, lugares, estilo que quero usar nas fotos.
Faço as buscas com palavras-chaves em inglês para obter mais resultados (vale usar o tradutor!) e se quero cenários mais específicos de fotografia de alimentos costumo buscar assim:
- nome do alimento (em inglês) + food photography -
SEARCH VISUAL REFERENCES Visual references are the inspirations found in other images, which will translate our idea before it happens. Here we don't need to include only images of the object itself, we can also incorporate ideas that somehow translate the session we want to do, it can be portraits, drawings, texts, color palettes. I use Pinterest to select visual references and define the type of light, mood, colors, places, style I want to use in the photos. If I want food photography scenarios, specifically, I usually type: - the name of the food + food photography -
FAZER UM MOOD BOARD
Esta vai ser a união daquelas referências visuais que encontramos e que parecem traduzir nossa idéia. Gosto de fazer uma apresentação em uma única folha, dispondo as idéias de forma organizada analisando cores, texturas, materiais.
Para fazer esta apresentação uso o Canva que tem versão para celular ou PC. Abro uma apresentação em A4 e vou colocando as imagens de uma forma organizada e adicionando algum texto se for necessário.
MAKING A MOOD BOARD
This is the arrangement of all those visual references that we found that seem to represent our idea. I like to make a presentation on a single sheet, arranging the ideas in an organized way analyzing colors, textures, materials.
To make this presentation I use Canva, which has a mobile and PC version. I open a A4 presentation and place the images in an organized way, adding some text if necessary.
SELEÇÃO DOS ELEMENTOS DO CENÁRIO
Com o Mood Board feito, fica bem fácil definir os elementos que farão parte da foto.
Gosto de colocar tudo junto, em cima de uma mesa e analisar se eles estão em harmonia. Depois, costumo tirar uma foto para registrar a lista de materiais de forma visual, e se há elementos que estão faltando, faço também uma lista escrita para checar na hora da sessão.

SELECTING THE ELEMENTS FOR THE SCENARIO
After having the Mood Board, it is very easy to define the elements that will be part of the photo. I like to put everything together on a table and analyze if they are in harmony. Then, I usually take a picture to register the list of materials in a visual way, and if there are elements that are missing, I also make a written list to check at the time of the session.

Abaixo vemos um exemplo de planejamento visual das fotos que fiz de uma Torta de Maçã Holandesa, sessão que por sinal, está em uma aula demonstrativa no YouTube onde também falo sobre planejamento, caso você queira assistir.
Começando pela definição do objeto a ser fotografado: Torta de Maçã
Escolhi esta preparação em particular, pois queria que fosse uma receita típica da Holanda. Como tenho preferência por fotografar doces e bolos, resolvi criar uma mesa de Café em estilo Holandês para servir a Torta para meus espectadores (convidados).
EXAMPLE Below we see an example of visual planning of the photos I took of a Dutch Apple Pie. This session, by the way, is a demonstration class that you can find on YouTube in case you want to watch. Definition of the object to be photographed: Apple Pie I chose this particular preparation because I wanted it to be a typical Dutch recipe. As I prefer to photograph sweets and cakes, I decided to create a coffee moment in dutch style to serve the pie to my guests.
Nas referências visuais temos uma imagem de paisagem Holandesa, os azulejos azuis que remetem às cores das porcelanas fabricadas aqui, as maçãs que são o ingrediente principal da preparação que escolhi, folhas verdes que trazem frescor e um toque natural para a composição, e duas amostras de cores que podem fazer parte do cenário sendo o bege para representar a torta pronta, e o cinza que seria a cor da superfície de fundo.
A seleção dos elementos está na foto à direita do Mood Board, com alguns dos elementos que eu escolhi previamente para criar o cenário.
A imagem abaixo foi uma das fotos finais resultantes deste planejamento visual.
Optei por tons menos vivos na edição por uma questão de estilo pessoal, fator que também pode ser traduzido no mood board, se você desejar.
As visual references, we have the Dutch landscape image, the blue tiles that refer to the colors of the porcelain made here, the apples that are the main ingredient of the preparation I chose, green leaves that bring freshness and a natural touch to the composition, and two samples of colors that will be part of the scenery, being beige to represent the baked pie, and gray that will be the color of the surface. The selection of the elements is the photo to the right of the Mood Board, it shows some of the elements I chose previously to create the scenario. The image below was one of the final photos resulting from this visual planning. I chose for less vivid tones in the edit process because of personal preferences. Editing style is a factor that can also be added to the mood board, if you wish.
